Bomag BT 60e

BRIEF

A view words:

„As an enviromentally conscious person, being entrusted to design the BT 60E tamper, I was quite delighted. The first electronic driven product BOMAG was going to launch on its way to a purely electronically operated product range – A rather important step in the companys history.“

The project:

Most parts of the previous tamper have been adopted. The engine has been replaced by an electric motor, the former tank by a purchased battery and the additionally necessary electronic control has been supplemented. The motor cover, the cover for the electronics and the cable duct between the motor and the electronics, had to be designed but further aspects had to be considered. Designing the first electronic driven machine within a fairly large range of products we also had to think about a new color management and new graphics which should work for all future electronic machines of BOMAG.

Design Process

BOMAG provided the 3D CAD model of the already existing tamper including all new parts and volumes which had to be designed.

Product Analysis

The top cover and the engine cover were the most important parts to design. Regarding the material of the engine cover, initially we considered using molded plastic or a folded sheet metal. We also considered the idea of adding LED lights.

Ideation

To fit into the product family of BOMAG, during sketching I always had the new „shapeline“ design DNA, with its specific design pattern, radii, and shapes in mind.

Variation

After the first presentation the customer already prefered a topcover design. Because of cost reduction, it was also clear that the customer preferred sheet metal instead of plastic. In the next step we showed three different designs, generated in CAD .

The first concept is characterized by a two-tone engine cover. The idea was to clearly communicate the electric drive with a generous blue component. The recessed sheet metal is intended to protect the company logo against scratches.

To generate a softer more dynamic shape, the second variant consists of a lasered and bent sheet metal.

Like the new generation of BOMAG machines, the engine cover of the third variant is split in the middle. The two side parts are yellow, the middle part is painted in anthracite.

Detailing

After the customer made the decision for his favourite design he requested to work on a possible substructure of the sheet metal cladding. I presented the engineers several propositions which they could bring into a functioning design.

Color Management

As the first electric machine launched by BOMAG FAYAT Group, color management played a very special role in this project. This blue was to compliment the conventional BOMAG colors yellow and anthracite in all future electrically driven machines. Possible shades of blue, color distributions and color components were tested.

Further adjustments have been made.

Realization

The sheet metal cladding has been edged on its upper and lower sides, creating a circumferential chamfer, which provides a more dynamic look and ensures more stability for the construction. The proportions of the BOMAG „swoosh“ have been optimized and now appear more elegant.

Final Design

Summary

This project has been distinguished by an excellent cooperation between the design team and the construction department. We would have liked to be able to realize the cladding as a plastic part, but since the market for this product was still difficult to assess, the sheet metal variant was chosen. I think we found a good solution for this.

The circumferential chamfer of the battery block is continued in the plastic cover and extends to the front. In the front view, the two lateral humps look like the raised eyebrows of a face and give the machine its individual and powerful character. The diamond pattern typical of the new BOMAG machines can be found on the plastic hood as well as on the nodal plate and the middle section of the engine cowling. The lateral engine cover with its diagonally backward contour, the top and bottom chamfer and the slim BOMAG „swoosh“ looks like the tank of a motorcycle, which gives the machine a very dynamic appearance even in its side view.

“The design of the BT 60E successfully meets the different requirements placed on this project and combines a modern appereance that fits seamlessly into the family design of the BOMAG machines with high functionality at low cost.”

Final Product

Launch

For the first time the tamper was presented at the world’s largest construction machinery trade fair BAUMA 2022, where it was a great audience success.

Finally, the blue tone was defined differently for the final product and the machine was supplemented with graphics and labels from BOMAG’s marketing department.
