BRIEF

The brand Systronik, as part of the Afriso group, is a German producer of measuring instruments. In 2014 we designed the award-winning multilyzer STX. They came up with a revolutionary idea: a modular system consisting of the universal base handles module or device and an application-specific sensor unit  sens for a wide variety of measured variables; pressure, temperature, humidity. The combination of sensor unit and handle results in a handy, ready-to-use measuring device.

DESIGN PROCESS

Systronik provided 3D models of the handle, the device, the transmitter, and all the different measure-units including the complete built-in technology. The project was initiated with three designers analysing and brainstorming. After a short ideation sketch part we switched to CAD and visualized our design ideas in the form of simple 3D models. Of the three designs shown to the client, mine was chosen. Following this, I created some variations and optimized the favorite to the final design.

Analysis

The customer was well prepared and gave us a concept with all dos and don’ts, all measures and technical necessities. We added competitor research and did our own ergonomical and functional investigations.

Ideation

I tried to create different shapes of design – some smooth, some edgy. Some simple, some complex. Always with the focus on the family design.

Variation

Inspired by the sketches, we all switched at an early stage to CAD to create our design ideas and presented three of the designs to the customer.

Elaboration

After the presentation  the customer selected his favourite design. This had to be adjusted to the specific technical requirements. First of all the measuring modules had to fit into each device, meaning that the devices should have the same proportions at the spot where they are connected with the measuring modules. The LED and the control buttons had to swap positions.

Technical Issues

A prerequisite included a lower and an upper shell, to  be produced in a two component injection molding process. The buttons should be realized as a membrane key. The measuring units needed a opening mechanism to be changed easily.

Product Language

The tools communicate high quality and ease of use. The design is reduced, with a clear and soft shape which fits well in your hand.

I retained the raised dot pattern on the rubber and used the existing color management, so that the product line fits into the current corporate portfolio. I suggested to change the dark blue of the previous rubber parts into a dark grey to underline a qualitative modern apperance.

Realisation

Finally the finishing touches were made. Radii, curves and surfaces were optimized, and labels placed.

Additonal Features

To be able to attach the devices to a metal part of a heater, oven or  machine they include magnets. I suggested to add a clip to attach the device to your clothing.

FINAL PRODUCT

The rubber remained dark blue and a black foil has been added.

Easy to read, the label has been placed on top of the devices and finally the buttons have been changed.
